Unlike in many other European countries there is no law outlawing nudity on any of Spain’s beaches, however most naturists like to congregate together in slightly more out of the way areas than the main tourist beaches. Other than the naturist beaches in Sitges and Barcelona which are fairly open most offer more seclusion and privacy, and you may need to have transport to reach them if they are not in your immediate vicinity. Spain is now home to several naturist resorts which occasionally offer access to their own beaches, or for those wanting to be even closer to nature there is now a naturist resort in the mountains that offers a unique holiday experience.
Barinatxe Nudist Beach, Sopelana, Near Bilbao
Barinatxe Nudist Beach is located in northern Spain in the very heart of the Basque country. There is a fun feel to this beach as every year they host a race, only for naturists, that is run over a 5km course. Contestants are only allowed to wear protective clothing like shoes and socks, a sun hat and sunglasses, other than that the race is run in true naturist tradition. Be careful what time of year you turn up here, the north of Spain is not always the warmest place to be.
El Torn Beach, Tarragona, Catalonia
El Torn is probably one of the most popular naturist beaches in the country; it is certainly the largest of them all. It is not far from Barcelona and can be found close to numerous naturist campsites. Whilst clothing is optional in the campsite and resort areas, nudity is most definitely mandatory on the beach. Though if you do decide to pop into the resort for something to eat, or have a drink at the bar, make sure you have some clothing with you as guests are required to be clothed in these areas.
Media Luna, San Jose, Murcia
The cove of Media Luna gets its name from the crescent moon shape of the beach here. Everything about this beach is relaxed. The sand is soft and warm and the whole area has a rustic and natural feel to it, perfectly suited to the naturist beach lover. This beach is just one of many beaches in the Cabo de Gata National Park that offer themselves up to the naturist, there is something very free about the atmosphere in this area which is often referred to as ‘hippie like’.
Playa de Sant Sebastia, Barcelona
The beach of Sant Sebastia is over a kilometre long and covered in golden sand. Like the neighbouring beach of Mar Bella it is very much a naturist beach. Being a city beach this area has great beach facilities like showers, toilets and plenty of lifeguard stations. Though naturist it is still a very traditional beach and attracts a lot of local visitors, including surfers who meet here when the conditions are right. Most naturists tend to congregate at the southern end of the beach here.
Guadalmar Beach, Costa del Sol
This beach is situated between Malaga and Torremolinos. At Los Almos the beach extends beyond the end of the road and towards the golf courses, it is here that you will find the naturist beach and a little further up a gay beach. Beach bars and other facilities are available at Los Almos however you must be clothed to make use of them.
