Unlike in many other European countries there is no law outlawing nudity on any of Spain’s beaches, however most naturists like to congregate together in slightly more out of the way areas than the main tourist beaches. Other than the naturist beaches in Sitges and Barcelona which are fairly open most offer more seclusion and privacy, and you may need to have transport to reach them if they are not in your immediate vicinity. Spain is now home to several naturist resorts which occasionally offer access to their own beaches, or for those wanting to be even closer to nature there is now a naturist resort in the mountains that offers a unique holiday experience.

Barinatxe Nudist Beach, Sopelana, Near Bilbao

Barinatxe Nudist Beach is located in northern Spain in the very heart of the Basque country. There is a fun feel to this beach as every year they host a race, only for naturists, that is run over a 5km course. Contestants are only allowed to wear protective clothing like shoes and socks, a sun hat and sunglasses, other than that the race is run in true naturist tradition. Be careful what time of year you turn up here, the north of Spain is not always the warmest place to be.

El Torn Beach, Tarragona, Catalonia

El Torn is probably one of the most popular naturist beaches in the country; it is certainly the largest of them all. It is not far from Barcelona and can be found close to numerous naturist campsites. Whilst clothing is optional in the campsite and resort areas, nudity is most definitely mandatory on the beach. Though if you do decide to pop into the resort for something to eat, or have a drink at the bar, make sure you have some clothing with you as guests are required to be clothed in these areas.

Media Luna, San Jose, Murcia

The cove of Media Luna gets its name from the crescent moon shape of the beach here. Everything about this beach is relaxed. The sand is soft and warm and the whole area has a rustic and natural feel to it, perfectly suited to the naturist beach lover. This beach is just one of many beaches in the Cabo de Gata National Park that offer themselves up to the naturist, there is something very free about the atmosphere in this area which is often referred to as ‘hippie like’.

Playa de Sant Sebastia, Barcelona

The beach of Sant Sebastia is over a kilometre long and covered in golden sand. Like the neighbouring beach of Mar Bella it is very much a naturist beach. Being a city beach this area has great beach facilities like showers, toilets and plenty of lifeguard stations. Though naturist it is still a very traditional beach and attracts a lot of local visitors, including surfers who meet here when the conditions are right. Most naturists tend to congregate at the southern end of the beach here.

Guadalmar Beach, Costa del Sol

This beach is situated between Malaga and Torremolinos. At Los Almos the beach extends beyond the end of the road and towards the golf courses, it is here that you will find the naturist beach and a little further up a gay beach. Beach bars and other facilities are available at Los Almos however you must be clothed to make use of them.

Mastering a foreign language in just six months may sound like too tall a task – that’s because it is. But even busy professionals can reach a level of fluency in this short time-frame that will allow them to break barriers and which will open up new opportunities. More than simply endearing yourself to your foreign counterparts (which of course goes a long way in helping you get what you want), competency in their language will help in understanding the particulars of a given deal and move the process along more quickly. This article contains advice for professionals who want to achieve a level of fluency in a foreign language that will benefit their work, but who do not have the time to take formal language classes. Follow this advice and see huge gains; fluency in just 6 months can be attained in Romance languages such as Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and German, while basic functionality can be obtained in more difficult languages like Chinese and Arabic.

1. Get a textbook. Purchase a high school or college language textbook. Your foreign counterparts will be much more impressed by some semblance of grammar and structure than by random vocabulary words spouted off out of context, making learning the rules of a language preferable to other approaches, such as that utilized by Rosetta Stone. Spend an hour a day working your way through the textbook.

2. Practice vocab and audio on the go. Don’t take the prior point to mean that vocabulary isn’t important. It is, and so is pronunciation. Leverage technology to study vocabulary and to hear native speakers using the language. In the car, on the plane or while waiting for an appointment, you can practice vocabulary on your smart phone or tablet using www.quizlet.com. The site lets you use already-created flash-cards, or you can make your own. You should also listen to the audio CD that came along with your textbook, and to other resources such as podcasts you can get from iTunes, whenever you have the chance. The treadmill can make a great study spot!

3. Talk it out – every bit of practice speaking helps.

Speak the target language as often as you can. Don’t be shy if you hear someone speaking the language – tell them you’re studying the language and that you’d love to bounce a few phrases off them. They will likely oblige. If you are studying a language you’re unlikely to frequently encounter naturally in your community, seek out speakers at appropriate ethnic stores or restaurants and online. A Skype practice chat will go far in honing your skills.

4. Read, read, read.

You need to read in the target language even if you don’t care about reading proficiency – it will help you with your speaking. Find news articles of interest to you; several of the major news outlets carry non-English versions of their articles. For more obscure languages, check out www.bbc.com. Note that if you’re studying a non-Latin-based language, this point doesn’t apply to you. It’s not worth trying to learn to read in Chinese or Arabic. Stick to conversation for those.

5. Have no fear.

Finally, don’t be afraid to make mistakes in your target language. You’ve got to practice to get better, and you will mistakes when you practice. It’s part of the deal. But people will be forgiving and will admire you for trying to speak their language.

When the summer months come around, millions of people head to the warmer regions of Europe for a much-needed holiday, and the tourist industries of those countries have come to rely on the income that results from this influx. From the Algarve in Portugal to the Turquoise Coast of Turkey, British visitors spend huge amounts of money during their travels.

One of the most popular countries, perhaps the most popular, is Spain, a nation that is thought to have invented the package holiday. Having welcomed tourists from all over Europe for many decades, the locals know all there is to know about providing a welcome that’s as warm as the weather. It’s not a surprise at all to discover Spain is just as popular now as a destination as it was in previous decades.

Spain is obviously doing something right

The major factor in this success is of course the climate. The blues skies and baking sun provide the perfect backdrop to any vacation, of course, but there’s surely more to it than that. Plenty of other countries enjoy the same weather conditions, yet they fail to attract tourists on anywhere near the same scale, so what is it that the Spanish are doing that others are not?

Well, for many people the answer lies more with the facilities than with the climate. People visit Spain for the sun perhaps, but they also keep returning because they know they will be able to find plenty to do while they are in the country. The plethora of restaurants and bars that cater for the nightlife-hungry revellers stands as a testament to the country’s commitment to making sure everyone has a good time.

The tourist army marches on its stomach

In just about any Spanish holiday resort, you can find a comprehensive selection of restaurants offering a number of different types of cuisine. Needless to say, there will be several offering the finest local delicacies, which will include a number of dishes featuring freshly caught fish. However, the ubiquitous paella remains a favourite with both visitors and locals alike.

The hungry tourist will often be able to find Italian restaurants as well, offering delicious pizzas and pastas, and all in the most relaxed, tourist-friendly atmosphere. Greek cuisine isn’t forgotten either, which is good news for those visitors who are partial to some mouth-watering souvlakia, perhaps.

A diverse selection to tempt everyone

Asian dishes are popular all over the world, of course, so it’s not a big surprise to discover a plentiful selection of such cuisine in Spain. Thai, Chinese and Indian restaurants are found all over the country, especially in the holiday resorts, and it’s even possible to find a Mongolian or Bangladeshi specialist here and there, too.

One of the most pleasing things about visiting a holiday resort, whether it’s in Spain or Senegal, is the opportunity to do a little exploring. Every trip to a new location is a voyage of discovery in itself, especially for the food lover. It’s reassuring to know that Spain, Europe’s most popular vacation provider, is home to such a diverse selection of eateries to tempt tourists of all ages.

Passion is probably the best word to describe Spain as a country. This land of Spanish tapas bars, flamenco, bullfighting, crowded beaches and siestas has a centuries-old history. Lying to the south of the grand Pyrenees, you will not be lacking for festivals to participate in when booking a flight to Spain because they are held year-round. If you stay long enough, you might even acquire the laid-back lifestyle that the locals are known for, and even fall into the habit of taking mid-afternoon siestas. The Spanish people also have an amazing culture, which you will discover more of when you mingle with the locals at a Spanish tapas bar while sampling the local brew and what their cuisine has to offer.

Top Tips when Travelling to & Booking a Flight to Spain

Now, if you are planning to book a flight to Spain, what are the things that you need to remember? Take a look at the following list:

Know when the best time is to travel to Spain.

If you are planning to laze by the beach and you don’t mind the crowd, you should definitely book a flight to Spain when the weather is at its most pleasant. Summers in Spain can be very dry and hot while winters are wet and mild.

Generally, the best months to visit are from May to June as well as September. If you are visiting cities in the southern part of Spain, April and October are ideal months to visit. If you want to avoid the crowd, make sure not to book a flight to Spain during the months of July and August. Still, Spain is practically a year-round destination because there’s a fiesta to attend and places to visit from January to December.

Book a flight to Spain in advance so that you can plan your travel itinerary well.

When booking a flight to Spain, time your visit in such a way that you can participate in some of the most fun activities and fiestas held in the country. For instance, February is when almost all of Spain is abuzz with festivities, particularly Cadiz and Tenerife. A huge event held every April is the la Feria de Abril while the San Fermin running of the bulls in Pamplona is celebrated from July 7 to 14.

Have a historical, cultural or artistic tour of Spain.

Whether it’s a historical, cultural or artistic tour of Spain that you would like to have, the best place to start is the vibrant capital of Madrid. This is where you can see architectural wonders, museums and experience what Spain is all about as a country.

Sample what their buzzing nightlife and beach life has to offer.

Finally, if you would like to sample what the night life and beach life of Spain has to offer, go to places like Costa del Sol which is home to some of the most excellent beaches in the country. You can also visit Ibiza which is famous for its raving nightclub. No matter what it is that interests you as a traveller, you can experience everything that the Spanish culture has to offer by booking flights to Spain.

Whilst it’s usually the warmer spring and summer months that trigger a mass migration to places like the Costa Del Sol and the Balearic islands, a trip to Spain is hugely enjoyable at any time of year. There are also a number of advantages to visiting Spain in winter, when the summer crowds have dispersed and the streets are quieter, and whenever you visit you’re unlikely to find yourself without anything to do – even if the banana boats and sun loungers have been put away until next year.

Clearly, Spain is not much cop as a beach holiday once the summer heat has gone south, but with temperatures of between 5 and 13 degrees Celsius in autumn and winter, it’s still a warmer option that other parts of Europe, such as the UK and Germany. You’re also far more likely to see blue sky and sunshine here in winter than elsewhere in Europe, with the more northern areas of Spain, such as Madrid, getting around 3 hours a day, and southern cities like Malaga up to 6.

See The Sights

Sightseeing is a year round activity in Spain and there is plenty to see here once the colder months advance. Most historical sights don’t shut during winter, although opening hours may be shorter. The Alhambra in Granada, for example, is a stunning palace and fortress that provides a fascinating insight into Spanish Moorish history and is open all year round. It can get very crowded in summer so winter is a far better time to visit.

Wander through the Alameda de la Alhambra Park in the winter sunshine and then take a guided tour to explore the Mudéjar style interiors of the palace itself. Whilst winter might seem a funny to visit an area like Alicante, there are some fantastic parks and promenades to stroll through here in the colder months, as well as the Santa Barbara Castle, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe, which has spectacular views out over the ocean. Also worth a visit are the Mezquita de Córdoba, the Freixenet and Codorniu wineries in Montserrat and the Gaudi cathedral (the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.

Get Some Culture

Culture is something that Spain has by the bucketload and it’s much easier to enjoy it when you are not sweating under the heat of the summer sun. Madrid’s Prado museum is open all year round, as is the fascinating Guggenheim in Bilbao. Having produced luminaries such as José Carreras and Plácido Domingo, it’s no surprise that Spain is a hotbed of opera action. Theatre is also hugely popular here and you can catch performances of everything from ballet and opera, through to orchestral music at somewhere like Madrid’s Teatro Real. For a taste of traditional Spain, you can always find some flamenco, whatever the weather. Malaga is a great city for sampling this exciting style of dance – check out venues like Kelipe Centro de Arte Flamenco.

Shop ‘Til You Drop!

You don’t need summer sun to go shopping and Spain certainly has no shortage of excellent shopping spots. Whether you’re into the commercial shops and malls of somewhere like Madrid, or the boutique shops of Barcelona, you can always find something pretty to spend some cash on. If you’re looking for some unique Christmas presents – from a traditional Spanish lace fan to a bottle of excellent Rioja – you will find plenty of choice in shops and markets all over the country.

Eat, Drink & Be Merry

Nightlife and eating out are another all seasons constant and unless you’re visiting one of the touristy coastal areas then you should have no problems with restaurants and bars being shut out of season. Tapas is eaten throughout Spain during the summer and winter months and the cosy atmosphere of a tapas bar – with steaming dishes of tortilla, chorizo and patatas bravas covering the table – is hard to beat on a winter night. If you want serious nightlife then head to Spain’s largest metropolises, like Madrid, Seville, Barcelona and Oviedo for a mainstream and underground nightspots and drinking establishments that range from sophisticated cocktail bars, to traditional Spanish drinking holes.

At only a couple of hours journey from most European countries, Spain is a great destination for a winter minibreak or weekend trip away. Although you might only pick up a very light tan at best during the colder months, there’s enough food, culture, atmosphere and fashion to keep you entertained whatever the weather.

For many years now, thrill-seekers of all ages have been flocking to theme parks to enjoy a day of fun and adventure. Even in the midst of an economic recession the visitor numbers are still high, perhaps indicating the importance of a little escapism from the dreary news headlines that greet us on a daily basis.

The epicentre of the theme park industry is undoubtedly Florida in the USA. The Sunshine State is home to some of the most famous parks in the world, mainly due to the presence of various Disney-related sites. Having said that, there are some other notable places there that aren’t related to the ever-popular Mickey Mouse.

Europe’s thrill-seekers have plenty of choice

Across Europe, there are a large number of impressive theme parks designed to attract locals and tourists alike, and they offer a wonderful selection of white knuckle rides, as well as relaxing activities for those who want a little more rest and recuperation. There really is something for everyone at these establishments.

The modern theme park may contain many highly technological rides that feature state of the art design, but in reality the places are simply extensions of the old fun fairs of a century ago. To the visitor, they two places may seem far apart, but the principle, and indeed the end result for the general public, is still the same.

Catering for all tastes

The fastest and most exciting theme park rides aren’t to everyone’s taste, of course, and for every person in the queue waiting for the thrill there will be another sitting this one out. Many people are simply terrified of the prospect of being carried at high speed over a course that often includes upside down sections, loop-the-loops and corkscrews.

Some of the most famous rides, especially in the Disney parks, are based on specific movies. They include the Harry Potter series, Spider-Man, Back to the Future and Men in Black. Conversely, there is also a series of movies that was actually inspired by a theme park ride: Pirates of the Caribbean.

For more fun, plan ahead

To make it easier for visitors, many parks are segregated into different areas, each with its own theme. That way, customers can select their own preferred route around the park, in order to get the most from their visit. It’s often a wise move to obtain a map before visiting day in order to plan the day in advance.

Perhaps inspired by the examples found in America, more and more European countries are playing host to increasingly sophisticated theme parks. Many entrepreneurs have realised that holiday resorts such as Tenerife have a ready-made potential customer base every summer purely because they play host to thousands of tourists each week.

Needless to say, the climate of the Canary Islands offers itself perfectly to the holiday industry, and Tenerife has been welcoming tourists for many decades now. With regular flights from countries such as the UK, France and Germany, it continues to be a magnet for thrill-seekers, and this trend looks set to continue for many more years to come.

David Rice is based in the UK and works for a company that provides affordable Tenerife car hire. He knows that when it comes to car rental, Tenerife always has the best deals.

Studying a Second Language May Help Delay Alzheimer’s Symptoms in Some People

Doctors and researchers are constantly looking for ways to help people afflicted with memory disorders retain as much cognitive function as possible for as long as possible. Studies have shown that keeping the brain active is crucial to staving off symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Therapies include tasks that engage people with dementia, requiring them to think about the actions they perform. One of those tasks getting a lot of attention lately is learning a second language and using it constantly in order to improve brain function and boost its performance. It is thought that acquiring and regularly using a second or even multiple languages can delay the symptoms of Alzheimer’s by as many as four years.Research has shown that acquisition and use of a second language, be it French, Italian, German or any language of interest to the individual can help delay the onset of memory impairment by up to five years.

Ellen Bialystok, a psychologist at York University in Toronto, Ontario thinks, “Being bilingual has certain cognitive benefits and boosts the performance of the brain, especially one of the most important areas known as the executive control system. We know that this system deteriorates with age but we have found that at every stage of life it functions better in bilinguals. They perform at a higher level. It won’t stop them getting Alzheimer’s disease but they can cope with the disease for longer.”

Bialystok’s research was published in the journal Neurology. She looked at 211 people with symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, 102 who were bilingual and 109 who spoke only one language. The age of onset of cognitive impairment was noted for each person, and the people who were bilingual reported symptoms of memory loss or dementia an average of 4.3 to 5.1 years later than those people who spoke only one language. She concluded that switching between different languages stimulates the brain and helps it build up a cognitive reserve, similar to a “reserve fuel tank” in a car.

The key to delaying the onset of Alzheimer’s symptoms is to use multiple languages every day, choosing words in both languages constantly. According to Bialystok, “It works best for people who speak two languages every day, like immigrants moving to a new country who speak their own language at home. But every little bit helps.”

This study is one of many currently taking place that are trying to uncover new ways to bolster mental function and improve cognition. Contrary to what was originally thought, bilingualism does more to improve focus, allowing for improved abilities to prioritize and multitask, rather than hindering cognitive function or causing confusion. Researchers seem to have reached a consensus that bilingualism is good for anyone, but especially those who are beginning to feel the effects of memory loss and dementia.

Dr. David Tal is a specialist in geriatric medicine and serves on the board of the Alzheimer’s Society of Toronto. He coordinates programs for those dealing with memory impairment at the Age Matters Alzheimer’s clinic in Toronto.

I have always had something against Spanish holidays for some reason. Years of hearing stories about people drinking and misbehaving for a fortnight made me think that it wasn’t the type of break for me.

With the benefit of hindsight this prejudice was a bit silly. It is such a huge county that there are bound to be lots of different types of holiday on offer there. With this in mind I decided to see what kind of Spanish holiday could be right for me.

Camping in the Med

I must admit that I had never thought about going camping in Spain before. It is such a huge country that there must be lots of places where you could enjoy a few nights under the stars. The more I think of it the better it sounds, as the warm weather would make for some lovely evenings with the family round the tent.

A Walking Holiday

I actually knew about this idea before but I had completely forgotten about it. El Camino de Santiago is one of the world’s great walks on a huge pilgrimage trail. It is translated as the Way of Saint James sometimes and I once worked with an Australian who walked it and said that it was sensational. You can start in the South of France or at any one of a number of other points along the way. It isn’t just for modern day pilgrims and people of all ages and from all walks of life give it a go.

A Fun Festival

Spain is famous for having a lot of different festivals and each one is wackier than the previous one. You probably already know about the bull running event in Pamplona but what about the amazing fireworks and giant figures of Las Fallas in Valencia? There are also enactments of old battles in various places and the flamenco tinged festival in Seville in April. However, my personal favourite is La Tomatina in August in Bunyol. It has been classed as the biggest tomato fight in the world and to be fair I am not sure that it has many rivals for the crown. At mid-day the town’s streets run red and the mass of locals and tourists end up having lots of fun while chucking vegetables ( aren’t they really fruits?) at each other.

Get in Some Golf

I used to have this image of golfing holidays in Spain being just for stressed out executives and football stars. With a little bit of online research I discovered that this is no longer the case, if it ever was. Anyone can enjoy a cracking round of the noble sport in somewhere stylish like the La Manga Club down in the south of the country. Even more surprising is that these trips are suitable for all the family, with lots of alternative entertainment on offer for those of you who don’t know your mashie from your niblick.

So what is it going to be? I must admit that all of these ideas are really tempting but I love playing golf and I like the idea of getting in some exercise while I am on holiday and eating hearty meals every day. However, I might stick a couple of tomatoes in my pocket just in case I get the chance to nip over to Bunyol as well.

Make the most of your Spanish holiday in La Manga Club. For La Manga rentals that don’t disappoint give Select Resorts a try.
